2/11 - 2 Corinthians 4: 3-6 "Hearts of Light"

3 If the Good News we preach is hidden behind a veil, it is hidden only from people who are perishing. 4 Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.

5 You see, we don’t go around preaching about ourselves. We preach that Jesus Christ is Lord, and we ourselves are your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.

  2. Some thoughts on the call to worship for this week:

God's designs are made known to us by shadows and patterns in our world that represent God's designs but that can never fully illustrate those designs because they are in fact beyond our ability to comprehend - but God in his loving kindness reveals his design through shadows and patterns that represent his unfathomable, indescribable glory.

One such pattern is the growth and ultimate birth of the Lord Jesus Christ in and from the womb of Mary.

The discomfort of pregnancy as Jesus literally grew inside Mary is a shadow of the discomfort we can feel at times as Jesus grows in us - stretching us, if you will, beyond what we may feel is even possible.

The journey of Mary and Joseph that brings them to the moment of Jesus' birth and they find themselves with no proper place to give birth to a baby - imagine bringing your pregnant wife to the hospital only to have them say, "I'm sorry, but we have no more rooms, no more beds, you will have to give birth to your precious baby in the garage out back of the hospital - exposed to the elements - dirty - no proper place to deliver a newborn. A shadow and pattern you may find familiar as Jesus is being born in you and you find no proper place for this glorious moment - never a "good" time to turn your life over to Jesus, in the middle of all our worldly concerns - this birth may happen in the most inconvenient of circumstances that make no sense to you but are all part of God's perfect plan for you.

And finally, the pattern of the birth itself. I will never know the pain involved in actual child birth - but I know it hurts - I know it hurts bad - but I also know that the resulting glory is worth all the pain and so much more.

Let the light of Jesus be born in you today. It may hurt. The timing may seem all wrong to you. There may seem to be no "right day" or "right moment" to let go and surrender to the Lordship of Jesus over your life... But trust God. Trust God. In God we trust. Right?

Oh Jesus - I pray that your light be born in me today, and tomorrow, and every day after. Amen.

  3. Open the Eyes of My Heart - this song will be done as a prayer - as our worship is moving us from the outer courts into the throne room - a quiet intimacy with God - asking the Holy Spirit to open our eyes to the kind of relationship Jesus desires to have with us - allow us to discover a new and immediate intimacy as followers - enable us to live by the power of the Holy Spirit - being filled - emptying ourselves so that we may be filled with God's power, God's goodness, God's light! Breath out the darkness - and breath in the light.
